The Zungu-Elgin team consists of more than 200 employees who work to ensure client requirements are met within the prescribed period and within budget. Our skilled and experienced Engineers, Supervisors and Craftsmen enable us to rapidly mobilise resources in order to adhere to customer requirements worldwide. Quite a number of our employees began their careers as Apprentices and have grown into skilled Craftsmen who take pride in their work and their status as Elgin-trained Artisans.

Zungu was born in the Umlazi township, Durban in 1967. He matriculated from the Vukuzakhe High School, and went on to complete his post Matric at Hilton College in 1994. He holds a BSc (Mechanical Engineering) degree from the University of Cape Town (UCT). He further completed the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at the UCT Graduate School of Business. Zungu obtained the Program for Global Leadership certificate from the Harvard Business School in Boston, USA.
Zungu can be described as a driven individual, that resonates a true entrepreneurial spirit. He believes that investments are key to economic advancement and sustainability. Inspiring transformation, through business empowerment, Zungu is a dedicated leader, unwilling to compromise on the aspirations of inclusive growth and equal economic participation. Zungu leads the Black Business Council to be the definitive voice of Black Business and a strategic centre of power for Black business in general. He further serves as a member of the BBBEE Presidential Advisory Council.

Mr Govender is a Chartered Accountant with experience in structured real estate finance having worked on multiple transactions within both the unlisted and listed (Real Estate Investment Trust) space.
Mr Govender has worked as a structured debt financier at Nedbank Private Wealth and Old Mutual focused on commercial real estate finance. He began his career as a trainee accountant at PwC before pursuing investment banking experience. He is a Fellow of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation that promotes high impact entrepreneurship in South Africa.
Mr Kanakana is a Non-Executive Director of Zungu-Elgin and a Senior Strategic Human Capital Business Partner at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).Read more about Theo Kanakana
He holds a BAdmin degree in Human Resources Management at the University of Venda; BA (Hons) in Industrial & Organisational Psychology at WITS University; Masters in Industrial & Organisational Psychology “Coursework” at UNISA, and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK.
His professional accreditation includes: Certified Talent Economist; Certified Change Management Practitioner (ADKAR); Certified Enneagram Coach; Certified Organisational Culture Practitioner (Barret Institute) level I and II.
Prior to joining the IDC, he was with the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) for 5 years mainly as the Head of department of Talent and Performance Management, and served in a number of Human Resources Committees and Chairs numerous Talent Management Committees and Forums.
His experience covers a wide range of skills which include Organisational Development, Psychological Assessments, Change Management, Talent and Performance Management, Employee Relations, Policies and Strategy formulation and many more.

Her experience spans over 12 years in private equity, corporate finance and venture capital. She has gained this experience at ABSA Business Bank, Investec Private Wealth, The National Empowerment Fund and the Public Investment Corporation: Isibaya Private Equity Fund. She sits on various investee boards across different sectors. Nomfundo has a background in Economics and has recently completed a Master’s in Business Administration with the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

Mr Young has extensive executive level experience in developing, transforming, and aligning company operations with strategic, tactical and operational objectives. This experience includes business turnaround, rapid business growth in a variety of markets, and merging and disposal of businesses. Industries include consulting engineering and mega project management in a variety of markets, technology intensive manufacturing, B2B and B2C sales and distribution. Geographies and cultures include Europe, North America, and sub-Saharan Africa. Recent focus has been in turning around a loss-making business through key interventions.

Mr Sheik is a Mechanical Engineer, with Masters Certification in Project Management from the University of George Washington. He is also an Associate Member of the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering.
Mr Sheik has 25 years of engineering and construction experience through working with global leaders in both the Petrochemical and Project Execution industries. He has worked for Engen, Hatch and Transnet.
His broad experience spans many disciplines in the Engineering and Construction fields. He is well versed in, Engineering design, Procurement, Construction Management, Project Commissioning, Contracts Management of multi-disciplined mega projects. He also has extensive experience in Rotating Equipment, Condition monitoring and Equipment health management, Static equipment, Above ground petroleum storage tanks, petrochemical piping and structural steel, electrical and instrumentation and civil disciplines.
Mr Sheik has presented technical papers abroad for the petrochemical industry in Malaysia and Hungary on Equipment Health Management and Shutdowns and Turnaround Management.
Ms Gumede is the Executive Assistant at Zungu-Elgin and has 7 years experience in her field.Read more about Nosipho Gumede
A lady born and bred in Umlazi, South of Durban. Ms Gumede matriculated in 2006 from Umlazi Comprehensive Technical High School and studied further at SA Maritime (Freight Handling). She has 7 years' experience in Admin, having worked in the Manufacturing Sector as well as Telecommunications. Ms Gumede joined Zungu-Elgin in January 2019 as a receptionist and was appointed as an Executive Assistant at the beginning of 2020.

Mr Naidoo joined Elgin in 1986 and has worked his way through the Company to be appointed as the Head of Petrochemical (Fabrication) in 2014.Read more about Julius Naidoo
Mr. Naidoo started as a Mechanical Draftsman and after 29 years at Elgin, he has progressed into the position he's in today.
He has a number of qualifications including a National Technical Certificate (Part V), UNISA Programme in Business Management and has attended the Murray & Roberts Management Development Course.

Mr Reddy joined Elgin in 1990 and has worked his way through the Company to be appointed as the Head of Sugar (Mechanical and Foundry) in 2008.Read more about Mervin Reddy
Mr Reddy's entire working career has been with Elgin, which has lasted over 25 years, 7 years of which have been the Head of Sugar.
Mr Reddy was born in Durban in 1969 and matriculated from Clairwood Secondary Technical School in 1987. Mr. Reddy has since attained a number of qualifications, including a national diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the Springfield Technical College, a national higher diploma from the Durban University of Technology, a certificate in business management from the University of Witwatersrand and has attended the Deloitte management development programme.
Mr. Reddy is also a member of the South African Institute of Mechanical Engineering.
Ms Zulu is the Financial Accountant at Zungu-Elgin and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.Read more about Phumelele Zulu
Phumelele Zulu is a lady from Umlazi township who matriculated from Vukuzakhe High School. She is a qualified chartered accountant. She completed her articles at Mazars Johannesburg in 2013. She joined Zungu-Elgin in March 2020. She has over 5 year post articles experience in the mining and IT industries. She is currently making plans to do a Masters in Accountancy with the UKZN.
Health & Safety Manager

Radlin Abbott was born in Durban in 1983 and matriculated from Northwood High School in 2001. Radlin is a prime example of the opportunities available at Zungu-Elgin Engineering for those who are career driven and committed to the core values and principles of Zungu-Elgin. He started working for Elgin Engineering in 2012 as a Junior Safety Officer and by following the career path laid out for him by the organisation, was able to work his way up the corporate ladder to his current position of HSE Manager. During these 8 years his partnership with Elgin has seen him and the company grow, as Zungu-Elgin has increased its footprint both locally and internationally. Radlin has gained expertise in the Petrochemical, Construction, Sugar and Energy sectors. With strong leadership traits he has been responsible for ensuring that Zungu-Elgin Engineering maintains its commitment to safety by upholding its excellent safety record in industry.
David Van Der Merwe
Mr Van Der Merwe is the Technical Manager at Zungu-Elgin and has worked for the company since 1980 when he joined as an apprentice.Read more about David Van Der Merwe
Mr Van Der Merwe joined Elgin Engineering in 1980 on completion of his apprenticeship. Over the years, he has held various positions within the company, from Welding Manager then QC Manager and Quality Assurance Manager and now presently Technical Manager where he oversees Welding, Quality and New Technology at Zungu-Elgin.

Mr Ackerman is the Fabrication Manager at Zungu-Elgin.Read more about Raymond Ackerman
Mr Ackerman was born in Durban and completed his matric at Fairvale High School. He started working for Nedbank in their foreign exchange department and became a member of the Institute of Bankers South Africa. He then worked for the JSE trading. He went on to complete his Fitting, Machining and Rotating equipment Trade Test while working for Genrec M.E.I.
In 1992, Mr Ackerman joined Engen Refinery as a rotating equipment specialist. He filled various roles while working within the Refinery including supervision, managing turnarounds and was the Construction Manager for Tank maintenance and repairs.
In 2011 until 2016, Mr Ackerman worked as the AIA Branch Manager for SGS.
In 2020, Mr Ackerman joined Zungu-Elgin Engineering as the Branch Manager. His role was to compile and submit tenders. Currently, he occupies the role of Fabrication Manager at Zungu-Elgin.
